Potassium Silicate Powder has better water solubility and higher bonding performance than powdered instant sodium silicate.
Description of Potassium Silicate Powder
Potassium Silicate Powder is a white powdery material, which can be quickly dissolved in water. Its molecular formula is: K2O·nSiO2·H2O, n depends on different specifications and different uses.
Potassium Silicate Powder has better water solubility and higher bonding performance than powdered instant sodium silicate.
Features of Potassium Silicate Powder
Initially, it liquifies easily in water. The alternative is normally straightforward and slightly alkaline.
Second, when mixed with water, it imitates an adhesive, staying with surface areas such as paper or wood.
One more critical feature is its high thermal security. It can hold up against high temperatures without melting or burning, making it handy in fire resistant materials. In addition, potassium silicate withstands corrosion from acids and salts. This protects surface areas in rough environments.
The powder also contains potassium, which is a nutrient for plants. When liquified, it can be utilized as a fertilizer to enhance soil top quality. However, it reacts with carbon dioxide in the air. Over time, this reaction forms a hard silica layer on surfaces.
Different grades exist based on the ratio of potassium oxide to silica. High-potassium grades are more soluble, while low-potassium grades are thicker. Each type suits different uses, from construction to agriculture.

Application of Potassium Silicate Powder
Potassium silicate powder has many uses across industries. Agriculture is a key area. It acts as a fertilizer to supply potassium and silicon to plants. This helps crops resist diseases and tolerate drought. For example, spraying it on rice can increase yields.
Construction uses it too. When mixed into concrete, it reduces water absorption and strengthens the material. It also prevents cracks from forming. Builders add it to paints as a binder, making the paint last longer and resist peeling.
In ceramics, potassium silicate acts as a flux. It lowers the melting point of clay during firing, saving energy. It also gives ceramics a smooth, glossy finish. This is common in making tiles and dinnerware.
Water treatment benefits from it. Adding the powder to water reduces corrosion in pipes. It forms a protective layer on metal surfaces, stopping rust. It also helps remove heavy metals like lead from drinking water.
Fireproof materials use potassium silicate as a coating. When applied to wood or fabric, it creates a barrier that slows burning. This is used in making fire-resistant curtains and building insulation.
Soap and detergent production uses it as a filler. It helps thicken products and improves their cleaning power. It’s also mild on skin, making it suitable for hand soaps.
Other uses include textile processing (as a dye fixative) and paper manufacturing (to increase paper strength). Each use takes advantage of its ability to bond materials or provide essential nutrients.
Production Method of Potassium Silicate Powder
1. Fusion Method
Mix potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃) with silica sand (SiO₂) in a 1:2 ratio. Heat the mixture in a furnace at 1200–1400°C. They react to form potassium silicate:
K₂CO₃ + 2SiO₂ → K₂O·2SiO₂ + CO₂↑. Cool and grind the solid product into powder.
2. Water Glass Process
Dissolve potassium hydroxide (KOH) in water. Add silica powder and heat to 80–100°C. Stir until the silica dissolves:
2KOH + SiO₂ → K₂SiO₃ + H₂O. Evaporate the solution to dryness. Grind the residue into powder.
3. Sol-Gel Method
Mix potassium ethoxide (KOC₂H₅) with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in ethanol. Add water to hydrolyze the mixture. A gel forms over time. Dry and heat the gel at 400–600°C to remove organic materials.
4. Precipitation Method
Add potassium chloride (KCl) to a sodium silicate solution. A precipitate of potassium silicate forms:
KCl + Na₂SiO₃ → K₂SiO₃↓ + 2NaCl. Filter, wash, and dry the precipitate.
5. Hydrothermal Synthesis
Combine potassium hydroxide, silica, and water in a sealed autoclave. Heat at 150–200°C under pressure. Crystals of potassium silicate form. Collect and dry them.
Each method offers different purity and particle sizes. Choose based on application needs.

Storage Condition of Potassium Silicate Powder
Sealed Containers:Store potassium silicate powder in airtight bags or jars. This stops moisture from getting in and keeps the powder dry.
Dry Environment:Keep it in a dry place. Use desiccants inside containers if needed. High humidity can make the powder clump together.
Avoid High Temperatures:Store at room temperature (15–25°C). Extreme heat can change the powder’s properties or cause it to decompose.
Separate from Acids:Don’t mix with acids. They can react and form silica gel, ruining the powder.
Label Clearly:Mark containers with the name, purity, and date. This helps avoid mistakes when using it later.
Use Proper Handlin:gloves when touching the powder. Clean up spills right away

5 FAQs of Potassium Silicate Powder
Q1
How to store instant potassium silicate powder?
Answer: Instant potassium silicate powder should be stored in a dry, ventilated, and cool place, away from direct sunlight and high temperatures. Since it is hygroscopic, care should be taken to prevent moisture during storage to prevent caking.
Q2
What is the difference between instant potassium silicate powder and sodium silicate?
Answer: The main difference between instant potassium silicate powder and sodium silicate is their chemical composition and properties. Sodium silicate is a compound of silicic acid and sodium, while potassium silicate is a compound of silicic acid and potassium. The two also differ in use and performance, with potassium silicate having greater fire resistance and stability in some applications.
Q3
How to use instant potassium silicate powder in production?
Answer: In production, instant potassium silicate powder is usually used as an additive mixed with other materials. According to the specific application scenario and process requirements, add an appropriate amount of potassium silicate powder to water to dissolve, and then mix and stir with other raw materials to make the required product.
Q4
Is instant potassium silicate powder harmful to human body?
Answer: Instant potassium silicate powder itself has no direct harm to the human body, but care should be taken to avoid inhaling dust or contacting the skin during use. Prolonged exposure or inhalation of big amounts of dust may cause respiratory and skin irritation. Therefore, protective masks and gloves should be worn during use to ensure that the operating environment is well ventilated.
Q5
How to choose suitable instant potassium silicate powder?
Answer: When choosing a suitable instant potassium silicate powder, you need to consider the purity, particle size, solubility and other performance indicators of the product, as well as the process requirements of the specific application scenario. At the same time, you also need to pay attention to factors such as the manufacturer’s reputation and after-sales service to ensure that you purchase high-quality products.
