Production Method of Titanium Oxide TiO2 Powder
Sulfate Process
Raw materials: Utilize ilmenite (FeTiO₃) as the primary raw material and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄).
Process: First, ilmenite is reacted with concentrated sulfuric acid to produce titanium sulfate (Ti(SO₄)₂) and ferrous sulfate (FeSO₄). After separation and purification, the titanium sulfate solution is hydrolyzed to form metatitanic acid (H₂TiO₃) precipitate. The precipitate is then filtered, washed, and calcined at high temperatures, usually 800 – 1000°C. During calcination, H₂TiO₃ decomposes into TiO₂, and the reaction equation is H₂TiO₃ → TiO₂ + H₂O.
Chloride Process
Raw materials: Use titanium – containing ores like rutile (TiO₂) and chlorine gas (Cl₂), as well as carbon (C).
Process: The titanium – containing ore is first chlorinated with chlorine gas in the presence of carbon at high temperatures to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄). The TiCl₄ is then purified by distillation. Subsequently, the purified TiCl₄ is oxidized with oxygen at high temperatures, typically 900 – 1200°C. The reaction equation is TiCl₄ + O₂ → TiO₂ + 2Cl₂, resulting in the formation of high – purity TiO₂ powder.

Storage Condition of Titanium Oxide TiO2 Powder
Store it in sealed containers. Sealing keeps air out. Air can have gases like carbon dioxide and water vapor. These can react with TiO₂ powder, changing its purity and properties. Please keep it in a dry place. The humidity should be below 40%. High humidity makes the powder absorb moisture. This can cause the powder to clump together and change how it behaves. You can put desiccants in the storage container to soak up extra moisture. Don’t let TiO₂ powder touch substances that can react with it. Avoid acids, bases, and reducing agents. Reacting with these substances will change the powder’s makeup and properties. The suitable storage temperature is between 15°C and 25°C. Extreme temperatures are harmful. They can make the powder expand or contract. This might change how reactive it is. Also, please keep it away from intense light. Even though TiO₂ powder isn’t super sensitive to light, too much light can still affect it a bit. So, store it in a dark or shaded area.
