Production Method of Copper Oxide CuO Powder

Thermal Decomposition Method

Raw Materials: Compounds like copper carbonate (CuCO₃) or basic copper carbonate (Cu₂(OH)₂CO₃) are used.

Process: Place the raw materials in a high-temperature furnace and conduct thermal decomposition at 300 – 800 °C. Taking basic copper carbonate as an example, the reaction equation is Cu₂(OH)₂CO₃→2CuO + H₂O + CO₂↑. After decomposition, the product is cooled and ground to obtain CuO powder.

Precipitation Method

Raw Materials: Copper salt solutions such as copper sulfate (CuSO₄) and alkaline precipitants like sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃).

Process: Under stirring, the alkaline precipitant is slowly added to the copper salt solution to form copper hydroxide (Cu(OH)₂) precipitate. The reaction equation is Cu²⁺ + 2OH⁻→Cu(OH)₂↓. The precipitate is then filtered, washed, dried, and calcined. Copper hydroxide decomposes into copper oxide, with the reaction Cu(OH)₂→CuO + H₂O.

Sol – Gel Method

Raw Materials: Organic copper salts such as copper acetate (Cu(CH₃COO)₂) are used as precursors, along with appropriate solvents and complexing agents.

Process: First, dissolve the precursor in a solvent to form a homogeneous solution. Then add the complexing agent. Through hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions, a sol is formed, which is aged to become a gel. Finally, the gel is calcined at a certain temperature to remove organic components and obtain copper oxide powder.

Storage Condition of Copper Oxide CuO Powder

  • Sealed Storage: CuO powder should be stored in sealed containers, such as plastic bags with good airtightness or glass bottles with tight – fitting lids. This is to prevent it from coming into contact with air, which can lead to reactions with gases like carbon dioxide and water vapor in the air, thereby affecting its purity and chemical properties.
  • Dry Environment: It should be stored in a dry environment with a relative humidity preferably below 40%. High humidity can cause the powder to absorb moisture, resulting in agglomeration and possible changes in its physical and chemical properties. If necessary, desiccants can be placed in the storage container to absorb moisture.
  • Avoiding Contamination: Keep CuO powder away from substances that can react with it, such as acids, bases and reducing agents. Storing it separately from such substances can prevent chemical reactions that would alter its composition and properties.
  • Proper Temperature: The suitable storage temperature is generally between 15°C and 25°C. Extreme temperatures should be avoided as they may cause thermal expansion and contraction of the powder, affecting its physical state and possibly leading to changes in its reactivity.
  • Light Protection: Although CuO powder is not extremely sensitive to light, prolonged exposure to strong light can still have an impact on its properties to some extent. Therefore, it is advisable to store it in a dark or shaded place.
