Aluminium nitride is the solid nitride phase of aluminium. It has high thermal conductivity (up to 321 W) but is also an electrical insulator. Its band gap is only six eV at room temperature, which makes it a potential candidate for use in optoelectronics.
The high thermal conductivity and electrical insulation properties make aluminium nitride an excellent choice for computer components and printed circuit boards. Aluminium nitride does not contain toxic or flammable substances, which makes it an ideal choice for many applications. This non-toxic material is also ideal for solar cells and microelectronics.
Laser cutting can make thin films of aluminium nitride. However, thicker forms are more difficult to machine. These thicker materials require custom-made tools and significant machining, which makes them expensive and difficult to obtain in small quantities.
