(Is Aluminum Nitride Toxic?)

Aluminium nitride is an electrical insulator with a high thermal conductivity of up to 321 W. Its band gap is six eV at room temperature, and potential applications include optoelectronics. Aluminium nitride is a solid nitride of aluminium.

Aluminium nitride is used in various industries, including lighting, high-power semiconductor modules, and communications. It can also be found in solar panel components. Aluminium nitride can also be used as a thermal conductor. However, it is difficult to process in small quantities due to its limited machining capabilities.

Aluminium nitride is low in melting point and stable in inert environments. It will decompose at 1800 degrees Celsius when exposed to oxygen or hydrogen. It also slows down in the water, strong acids, and mineral acids. It is also resistant to most molten salts.

Diffusion is the mechanism that causes aluminium nitride to oxidize. It is not a chain reaction. The diffusion process drives the reaction from a high concentration to a low concentration, forming an even layer of oxidation. The reaction stops once it reaches maximum diffusion. As a result, the aluminium particles will be dissolved.

Aluminium nitride is a very versatile material for high-performance electronic components. Its properties are similar to silicon, and its high thermal conductivity makes it a good substrate for LEDs, power modules, and other electronic devices. It is non-reactive and can withstand normal semiconductor processing.

A common method of manufacturing Aluminum nitride is the arc plasma process. This involves heating gases through two poles of an electrical arc. Both nitrogen and air plasma have been used. The heat is then transferred to a charge in a rotary furnace. This process is safe for the environment and doesn't require salts to be used in the flux.

The CVD method demands precise temperature control. Direct nitridation, however, requires high vacuum and alkali fluoride. This method requires high heating temperatures. Watari et al. reported a 74% yield from this method.
