(What is Titanium Nitride Used For?)
What is Titanium Nitride?
Titanium nitride is a compound with the molecular formula TiN and a molecular weight of 61.88. TiN powders are generally yellowish brown, ultrafine TiN powders are black, and TiN crystals are golden yellow.
The melting point of TiN is 2950℃, the Mohs hardness is 8-9, and the thermal impact resistance is good. TiN has a higher melting point than most transition metal nitrides and a lower density than most metal nitrides, making it a very heat resistant material.
TiN is a very stable compound and will not react with iron, chromium, calcium, and magnesium at high temperatures, and TiN crucible will not react with acid slag in the atmosphere of CO and N2. It is used with alkaline slag, so TiN crucible is an excellent vessel for studying the interaction of molten steel with certain elements. When heated in a vacuum, TiN loses nitrogen to form titanium nitride with a low nitrogen content.
Titanium nitride is an extremely hard ceramic material commonly used as a coating for titanium alloy, steel, carbide, and aluminum components to improve the surface properties of the substrate. As a thin coating, TiN is used to harden and protect cut and sliding surfaces, for decorative purposes (due to its golden appearance), and as a non-toxic exterior for medical implants. In most applications, coatings smaller than 5 microns (0.00020 inches) are applied.
What is Titanium Nitride Used For?
A well-known use of TiN coatings is for edge retention and corrosion resistance of machine tools such as drill bits and milling cutters, often increasing their life by three times or more.
Because of its metallic gold color, TiN is used as a coating for decorative clothing jewelry and automotive trim. TiN is also widely used as a top coating, often in combination with nickel (Ni) or chromium (Cr) plated substrates on consumer sanitary equipment and door hardware. As a coating, it is used in aerospace and military applications, and protects the sliding surfaces of shock absorbers on bicycles and motorcycles and the shock absorbers of radio-controlled cars. TiN is also used as a protective coating on the moving parts of many rifles and semi-automatic firearms because it is so durable. In addition to being durable, it is also very smooth, making it very easy to remove carbon deposits. TiN is non-toxic, meets FDA guidelines, and is already used in medical devices, such as scalpel blades and orthopedic bone saw blades, where sharpness and edge retention are important. TiN coatings are also used in implants (especially hip replacement implants) and other medical implants.
Less obviously, TiN films are also used in microelectronics, where they act as a conductive connection between active devices and metal contacts used to operate circuits, as well as as a diffusion barrier to stop metal spreading into silicon. In this case, TiN is classified as a "blocking metal" (resistivity ~ 25 µ ω ·cm), although it is clearly a ceramic from the point of view of chemical or mechanical behavior. Recent chip designs using 45 nm and above technologies also use TiN as a "metallic" representation of improved transistors. Combining a gate dielectric with a higher dielectric constant than standard SiO2, such as HfSiO, reduces the gate length while providing lower leakage, higher drive current, and the same or better threshold voltage. In addition, TiN films are currently being considered for coating zirconium alloys for fault-tolerant nuclear fuel.
Because of their high biostability, TiN layers can also be used as electrodes in bioelectronic applications, such as smart implants or in vivo biosensors that must withstand severe corrosion caused by body fluids. TiN electrodes have been used in subretinal prosthesis projects and biomedical micro-electro-mechanical systems (BioMEMS).
